Objectives

This program is designed to provide you with the following capabilities:

  • Use the SWAT+ environment and QGIS.
  • Manage the SWAT+ data entry mechanism and its databases.
  • Perform excellent data processing.
  • Manage meteorological variables for the model.
  • Present the data obtained in QGIS and Python and compare the results with actual data.
  • Apply SWAT+ in numerical modeling.

Content

The diploma is divided into 03 modules, each divided into 6 sessions developed over 03 months. The summarized content of every module is described below:

Module 01: Introduction to Hydrological Modeling with SWAT+ and QGIS

This module develops the key concepts to understand hydrological modeling using SWAT+ and QGIS. We will address introductory topics and review a pre-established model to understand the operation of SWAT + and the procedure for processing data required in a hydrological model.

  • Session 01: Introduction to Hydrological Modeling
  • Session 02: Components of SWAT+ Part I
  • Session 03: Components of SWAT+ Part II
  • Session 04: Components of SWAT+ Part III
  • Session 05: Preparing spatial data for a model
  • Session 06: Preparing tabular data for hydrological models.

Module 02: Hydrological Modeling with SWAT+ and QGIS

The past sessions covered the introductory concepts and the operation of SWAT+. Now, we will develop a series of applied hydrological modeling exercises with daily precipitation data and spatial data at the basin scale.

  • Session 01: Model 1 - Construction
  • Session 02: Model 1 - Simulation
  • Session 03: Model 2 - Construction and simulation
  • Session 04: Model 3 - Construction
  • Session 05: Model 3 - Simulation
  • Session 06: Model 3 - Analysis of results.

Module 3: Advanced modeling applications with SWAT+, QGIS, and SQLite

This last section will validate, calibrate, and perform a model sensitivity analysis using various tools of SWAT+ Toolbox. We will evaluate a calibrated model's hydrological and sediment balances and then create graphs by connecting the model database with Python and SQLite.

  • Session 01: Manual calibration of a hydrological model
  • Session 02: Automatic calibration tool in SWAT+ Toolbox
  • Session 03: Sensitivity analysis and calibration in SWAT+ Toolbox
  • Session 04: Validation and analysis of model results
  • Session 05: Evaluation of outflows and sediment transport in SWAT+ with QGIS
  • Session 06: Visualization of results with SQLite in Python.

Date and time

The course is offered in sessions of approximately 1.5 to 2 hours. All sessions start at 6pm Central European Time (CET) - Amsterdam Time.

  • Module 1 - November 2022 (08, 10, 15, 17, 22 y 24)
