Managing the world's water resources requires professionals to have multidisciplinary knowledge and an integrated approach, involving the management of surface water, groundwater and river hydraulics.

Today, there is a need for professionals that can deal with many types of software and programming codes that allow them to build numerical models for developing comprehensive evaluations of the current and future conditions of the water resources.

In this opportunity, Hatarilabs provides the Diploma of Numerical Modeling of Water Resources using open source software that will help all the professionals interested in developing their knowledge and skills in water resources assessment and modelling and develop changes towards a sustainable management.



Objective

Our main objective is to train the participants in the different tools for modelling water resources through the use of free software.

October 2021
Module 1: GIS in Water Management

Teacher: Marycarmen Martinez Cd. pHD.

Geographic Information Systems (GIS) are a powerful platform to develop solutions in water resources such as the estimation of water quality, the status of groundwater and their management at the regional and local scales. This course is theoretical and practical, designed to get to know the different tools of GIS and its applications to the management of water resources. No prior knowledge of GIS is required and is based on free software programs such as QGIS.

November 2021
Module 2: Python in Hydrology

Teacher: Saul Montoya M.Sc.

This course is focused on how to use the different packages related to numerical tools, data analysis, representation of graphs, and others. Many of these tools are applicable to the field of Hydrology in the preparation of data for hydrological models, statistical analysis of hydrological parameters and model result representation.

Module 3: Hydrological Modeling with HEC-HMS

Teacher: Marycarmen Martinez M.Sc.

The Hydrologic Modeling System (HEC-HMS) is a free program developed by the US Corps of Engineers that implements a series of hydrological methods to represent several physical processes of the water cycle. HEC-HMS also includes procedures necessary for continuous simulation including evapotranspiration, infiltration, hydrological routing and soil moisture accounting. The tools and options of HEC HMS make it a very versatile and powerful software for the hydrological simulation of different scenarios such as extreme events in arid regions, or water balances in wet climates.

January 2022
Module 4: Hydrological Modeling with SWAT+ & QGIS

Teacher: Saul Montoya M.Sc.

SWAT + allows simulating various physical processes in watersheds such as dividing watersheds into sub-watersheds, and dividing sub-watersheds into Hydrological Response Units, which are created based on the properties of land use, soil, and terrain topography. Model calibration is the most important and complicated part of the development of hydrological models and it is performed by carefully comparing simulated data vs observed data.

Module 5:  Hydraulic Modeling with HEC-RAS

Teacher: Marycarmen Martinez M.Sc.

HEC-RAS is a software designed to perform hydraulic 1D and 2D calculations on river channels either natural or man constructed. It allows steady flow, unsteady flow, sediment transport and water quality modelling. It was developed by the US army corps of engineers, US Department of defence and it is openly available software. The HEC-RAS steady flow is based on a one dimensional energy equation, while for the unsteady flow, HEC-RAS uses an implicit, finite difference method to solve the fully dynamic Saint-Venant equations.

Module 6: Modeling Aquifers with MODFLOW 6 and ModelMuse

Teacher: Saul Montoya M.Sc.

This course develops the main functions and applications of the latest version of the MODFLOW 6 groundwater modeling code through the ModelMuse interface, both developed by the United States Geological Survey (USGS). This version includes innovative tools for the construction and simulation of hydrogeological models, mainly highlighting the incorporation of the discretization option for discretized vertex grids.
